Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) is seeking to regain user confidence following a serious spam filter flaw that sent malicious emails to users’ inboxes. The tech giant announced a massive upgrade and redesign of Gmail in its 16 years of existence.
The company initiated a raft of measures that will see various features integrated directly into Gmail. These include video chat, messaging, virtual meeting rooms, shared file access, and real-time collaboration. With this integration, Google wants to change Gmail into an all-in-one service.
Several security features introduced in Gmail
Google also announced a set of new security features to permanently address phishing emails. It launched a new feature called BIMI or Brand Indicators for Message Identification that incorporates authentication into the company’s logos and blocks fake emails.
BIMI allows companies to attach corporate ownership to their logos, which helps them ensure they are only used for the right purposes. This also allows Gmail users identify verified emails.
Although the process may be a bit engaging for some companies, the benefits are worth it as companies will permanently address spam emails by ensuring that their emails display their corporate logos. In the pilot stage, however, this new feature will only be available to G-suit users only. Other Gmail users will not be able to access the service. In addition, the pilot program will generally not be available for a long period.
Google Reveals Massive Chrome Browser
Google also announced that it is running massive upgrades in its Chrome browser. The upgrade will see smartphone and laptop users save big on energy. Chrome developed issues in recent past that have seen its competitors capitalize on.
According to Google’s internal documents, TheWindowsClub, Chrome’s upgrade will involve throttling non-essential Javascript tasks in background tabs. The tabs will include things like ad interactions, reporting logs, and monitoring scroll position, among others. These are some of the issues that have been identified as major sources of battery drain.
