Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) has decided to leverage 3D printing technology through a partnership with Sandboxr.

The company launched the 3D printing services in 2014 and has reported that the number of demands for personalized options has been steadily increasing. The 3D printing technology is currently in its initial stages and is expected to keep growing over the next few years. Amazon has decided to exploit a noteworthy market gap in the gaming industry using 3D printing technology.

As the video game industry continues to grow, gamers are unable to access action figures from their favorite video games. Most gamers do love buying miniature action figures of their favorite video games or movies, but it is not easy to find such. Amazon plans to use this niche to make a business. Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) opened a 3D printing store last month where users can access filament and Computer Aided design software.

Gamers can now choose which character to print in 3D out of 40 characters from three popular video games. They can also tailor the selected character to their liking. They can also include various poses and finally review the product before printing it. The price range from the printed object ranges from $30 to $90. Since 3D printing is in its infant stage, it has not been adopted into the mainstream. It is potentially lucrative, and people are still coming up with new ways for its application.

For example, it can be used to produce study specimens. In one episode of Grey’s Anatomy, the doctors examined a tumor that was thought to be impossible to remove in a patient. After careful X-ray analysis, they decided to print a 3D copy of the tumor so they could find out the actual scale and shape. Long story short, the 3D print turned out to be helpful. Even though this is not an actual event, it is a good example of how 3D printing can be used to produce study specimens. This would be a huge advantage for practical application in many fields.
