To support the growth and maintain R Language, Hewlett-Packard Company (NYSE:HPQ), Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), Tibco Software Inc. (NASDAQ:TIBX), Oracle Corporation (NYSE:ORCL) and Alteryx have created R Consortium. It is a nonprofit organization created on the basis of Linux foundation.
It gives a new lease of life to the thriving R Programming language, which is increasingly used by statisticians and data scientists. The new initiative will bring all of the users of the R Language under one umbrella.
The R Consortium is created with the help of R Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization established to maintain R Programming Language. The R Foundation will itself support its own growth.
The new initiative is on the background of Microsoft acquiring the support provider and distribution seller of R – Revolution Analytics five months back.
The sponsors of the R Consortium have also developed the products for commercial purpose using the R programming language.
Another notable point is that the local R users have already established the groups like the Bay Area R Users Group.
However, R Consortium will handle the key technical decisions with the help of an infrastructure steering team. It will also monitor the working groups.
A core member, John Chambers at R Foundation and R Project said the new initiative will provide an opportunity to benefit from the R Community thriving across the world and ensure an availability of improved R Language.
The firms using the R language has increased multifold over the last few years. The R Consortium is the result of increased thrust to support the needs of the growing R Community worldwide.
It provides support to the firms engaged in maintaining, developing and distribution of R software and the R Foundation. It provides an integrated platform for all users of the R language.
And at the same time, R Foundation will take a role of maintaining the core R Language while R Consortium will help in developing projects based on R language. Therefore, both will extend necessary support in developing packages and software projects using R language.
