Toyota Motor Corp (NYSE:TM) and Equilon Enterprises LLC have bagged the $8 million contract from California Energy Commission (CEC) to establish a hydrogen refueling facility for the trucks at the Port of Long Beach. Equilon Enterprises LLC is conducting the business under the name of Shell Oil Products US.
The funding for the project is to subject to the approval of the upcoming CEC meeting. The funding will help to develop electrical infrastructure and hydrogen refueling facility at the ports, distribution centers/ warehousing centers in California.
Long Beach is one of the biggest freight hubs in the world. The successful execution of the project by Toyota and Shell will help to ensure the use of hydrogen fuel based electric trucks with zero emission in and around the Long Beach.
General Manager (Hydrogen) of Shell, Mr. Oliver Bishop said the proposed project will promote the growth of hydrogen fuel based freight sector in California. Hydrogen based vehicles will help to decarbonize the heavy duty transport sector of California. World renowned players Toyota and Shell combines their expertize to make this dream project a reality.
Shell will use its expertize to build, own and operate the hydrogen facility at the Long Beach Port to refuel the Toyota heavy duty vehicles as well as public transport if the project is approved by the CEC.
Director (Advanced Technology Vehicles) of Toyota North America, Mr. Craig Scott said: we greatly appreciate the efforts of CEC to recognize the importance of this vital project at Los Angeles and Long Beach Ports.
The company will continue to demonstrate the use of fuel cells as sustainable and innovative technologies for electrification of the heavy duty and light commercial vehicles. The alliance with Shell further strengthens its commitment to developing the hydrogen as an alternative and sustainable fuel facility for the transportation sector and also complements its retail station based in Northern California. Hydrogen for this refueling facility will be sourced from the adjacent Tri-Gen facility of Toyota.
