Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) has a new update for its Aviate launcher for Android devices, and it comes with the smart stream feature.
Aviate launcher has been described as a worthy home screen replacement due to its ability to self-customize your services and applications to suit user preferences. The launcher will now be able to perform these tasks using the new smart stream feature. The feature is a bit like a more powerful version of Google Now.
The company announced that the feature will optimize the service by collecting relevant information from location and apps based on user trends. The application then collects and array of content that the specific user might find interesting. The smart feature operates as a learning engine, meaning it becomes more efficient as the client continues to use it.
If the user is a sports fan, it can adapt to constant sports checks to bring team scores to the user. The application brings music applications to the front and center of the screen when earphones are plugged in. The application also provides relevant information when the user is on the move. For example, it can provide information about nearby restaurants or popular landmarks in a specific area. The feature is currently available to users in the United States and is expected to expand to other regions in the future.
The application has been met with mixed feelings. Some users feel that Smart Stream takes over too much of the user’s customizations. Users are however fond of the system because it offers a new unique way to interact with the mobile operating system. It is a more comprehensive system compared to Google Now.
The concept behind Smart Stream is clever though it might not be the best solution to what users want. Many users feel that Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO) should have introduced the Smart Stream feature as a second Aviate app, mostly because users want to receive information automatically. This would be a better option rather than spending a lot of time on customization.
